Congratulations 2009 Graduates: 4 December 2009
A big congratulations to all our 2009 graduates!
We've had a 100% practical pass rate for our February 2009 Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Applied Aesthetics graduates.
Our February 2009 Diploma in Spa Therapies graduates have had a 100% pass in both their theory and practical.
Between the two classes, 91.7% have gained over 80% in their overall results.
This year, our February 2009 intake students have been extremely friendly, diligent and hard-working. They have been an absolute pleasure, and, for those not continuing their training with us, we will miss them all!
Welcome Our New Tutor for Our Certificate in Nail Technology: Michelle Crouch: 1 December 2009
Michelle Crouch, owner and operator of a leading Christchurch nail clinic MC for Nails, has joined the National School of Aesthetics team. She comes to us with 18 years experience in the nail technology industry as well as several years of teaching behind her in the same field. Michelle has also won many awards and kudos for her nail technology skills.
Starting off after completing her training by offering friends and family nail treatments, she gradually moved into a Merivale hair salon and then into her own business, MC for Nails. It was while she was operating this clinic that she discovered the quality of training some nail technicians had -- primarily those from short, non-NZQA-Approved courses -- was not adequate.
With this in mind, Michelle started up her own school and worked as the main tutor there. During this time, her training put some top-notch nail technicians into the industry.
Unfortunately, other priorities took over and she was unable to continue with her school, but the passion for teaching still burned within Michelle. When the nail technology tutor position became available at the National School of Aesthetics, she jumped at the opportunity.
We at NaSA are excited to have Michelle Crouch as a part of our team and warmly welcome her to the NaSA family.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Further Information for All Customers and Students Regarding "Swine" Flu: 16 June 2009
This story is no longer valid.
The "Swine" Flu has now begun community transmission in New Zealand.
We encourage all staff, students, clients and visitors who are unwell to please contact the school to let us know you are unwell, and we may ask you to stay away to avoid exposing others to not only "swine" flu but also other influenza viruses. Educational environments spread viruses quickly and easily, so we ask you to please avoid exposing students and staff to illness if you are unwell yourself.
We have released two memos today with regards to this issue (based off the Ministry of Education information on their Web site):
- Swine Flu Memo dated 16 June 2009
- Student Notice - Board Notice dated 16 June 2009
Also see our previous story on "swine" flu for further information.
If you would like more information, see the Ministry of Health Web site.
First Come, First Enrolled in Remaining July Beauty Therapy Places: 12 June 2009
This story is no longer valid.
As we now are reaching the point where we may have more applications than spaces for our July 2009 Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Applied Aesthetics course, and one month out from the starting date, we are now moving to a "first come, first served" enrolment system.
This means, while we will interview all applications for this course, there may not be sufficient places left to enrol all applicants. If we have more enrolments than places, we will advise you of this upon enrolment and may advise you to shift your application to the October intake.
If you want to find out how many places are still available before applying, please contact us, and we can advise you on this.
As always, if you have any further questions or would like further information, please feel free to contact us, and we will endeavour to assist you as best as we can.

Information for Students, Staff, Customers and Visitors Regarding "Swine" Flu: 27 April 2009
This story is no longer valid.
The media are reporting the emergence of a new influenza virus infecting over a thousand people in Mexico and a handful of people in the USA at present. Media are reporting this could be a new pandemic or epidemic.
As an educational environment, we need to be vigilant against viruses like these as, you may no doubt already have found out, viruses spread quickly in a school environment.
The Ministry of Health have issued a few guidelines for all people to follow:
- Make sure you have your flu shot.
- It won't cover this strain but may defend you partially against it.
- Frequently wash your hands and dry them thoroughly.
- If you sneeze or cough, do so into a tissue and dispose of the tissue immediately.
- If you can't sneeze or cough into a tissue, use your hand and wash them thoroughly and immediately.
- If you feel like you are coming down with the flu:
- Do not come to school.
- Call in sick to school.
- Visit a doctor immediately.
- Gain a medical certificate from your doctor to cover you here.
Your well-being and the well-being of your classmates and school officials is paramount over course rules in this instance.
Some things to keep this in context:
- Only 20 people so far have been confirmed to have died from this strain of the virus at the time this story went "live".
- Worldwide, 250,000 to 500,000 people a year die from "normal" flu strains.
We may issue further instructions in the near future if this virus turns into a pandemic or epidemic.
If you would like more information, see this release from the Ministry of Health.

Now's a Good Time to Train: 20 February 2009
This story is no longer valid.
With the economic downturn hitting New Zealand, there's never been a better time to train. If you are an existing nail technician, beauty therapist or massage therapist, now's a good time to up-skill.
Tertiary providers throughout the country are seeing a rise in the number of people training in their chosen field. Some reasons you might want to train are:
- You may feel not-so-secure in your job, or maybe you lost your job, due to the worsening economic climate.
- You feel there's no better time to train (you've got nothing to lose).
- You think having skills and the right training will get you the job you want.
- You have the opportunity to become your own boss after you complete your training, giving you greater freedom.
- If you're already a beauty therapist, nail tech, massage therapist or hairdresser, you want to add more services to the ones you can perform to make you more employable and/or offer a wider range of treatments to your customers, giving you an edge over your competition.
- Student loans are usually interest-free, so they usually don't accumulate interest while you are studying or after you've graduated (see StudyLink and IRD for further information and exceptions to this).
- Course fees for domestic students are relatively low and stable due to Fee and Course Cost Maxima (FCCM) policy.
Don't worry; you're not alone. We have many students at present who are in the same circumstances as you, and we're here to assist as best as we can.
The personal services and well-being areas of the economy are still doing moderately well, with consumers still wanting to get that "feel good" factor in a time of such "doom and gloom". This trend looks set to continue.
We are one of the best beauty training establishments in New Zealand, with an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally for extremely higher-than-average (and in many cases, excellent) standards and success rates. If you want to get ahead in the industry, and have an edge over others in this industry, train with us. (The right hard-working attitude helps too!)
As always, if you have any questions or would like further assistance, please feel free to contact us, and we will endeavour to assist you as best as we can.
