The Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Applied Aesthetics course is the largest and most comprehensive entry-level course we offer at this time.
This course includes the Certificate in Aesthetics, Certificate in Physiatrics and Certificate in Electrology courses rolled into one large course.
Graduates successfully completing this course become a fully-qualified Beauty Therapist as recognised in New Zealand and most countries throughout the world.
This is the most comprehensive, "purest", internationally-intergrated and longest-running beauty therapy course in the South Island, and one of the longest-running beauty therapy courses in New Zealand.
It is important to note that any beauty therapy course you are looking at undertaking complies with the following:
- It takes a year to complete full-time (120 credits); and
- You undertake supervised practical training (required for employment); and
- It includes all the subjects as we have listed below, incorporating Beautician, Physiatrics and Electrology work.
- It is NZQA-Approved and approved by ITEC, CIBTAC, and/or CIDESCO; and
- It is recognised by the industry and the majority of its graduates gain work in the industry.

This course is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and the National School of Aesthetics is accredited to teach it.

Manicure & Pedicure Aim: Students will be able to determine contraindications, recognise nail diseases and disorders, and demonstrate proper use of manicure tools. Manicure and pedicure treatments include nail filing, specialised nail treatments, massage of the hand & lower arm or foot & lower leg, and nail enamel application, with the student completing the treatment to an industry-standard in an industry-acceptable time-frame.	4	4
Skin Care & Eye Treatments Aim: Students will be able to safely and correctly perform superficial and deep cleansing, toning, mask, pre-heat, facial massage and moisturising treatments according to the client's skin type to an industry-acceptable standard in an industry-acceptable time-frame. Performance of skin analysis and recognition of skin diseases, disorders and contraindications are required. Students must also safely and correctly enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes and perform facial hair bleaching treatments to an industry-acceptable standard in an industry-acceptable time-frame.	6	4
Make-up Aim: Students will be able to select and apply make-up that suits the client and his/her needs to an industry-acceptable standard in an industry-acceptable time-frame. The range of make-up techniques in this course is limited and includes some corrective work. Note: This is not a make-up artistry course and limits itself to make-up in a beauty therapy context.	5	4
Waxing Aim: Students will be able to perform waxing treatments on the underarm, bikini line, full leg, lip, chin, forearm, and eyebrows, employing the most suitable waxing product, to an industry-acceptable standard in an industry-acceptable time-frame. Recognition of contraindications, skin diseases and disorders is required. Students must demonstrate knowledge of the function, main ingredients, advantages and disadvantages of various waxing products.	4	4
Facial Electrical Treatments Aim: Students will be able to select the appropriate equipment for treatment, check for contraindications, and apply the treatment correctly, effectively, safely and within an industry-acceptable timeframe. Treatments covered include galvanic (iontophoresis and desincrustation), microcurrent, high frequency (direct and indirect), vacuum suction, faradic, infra-red, and deep cleansing in a facial therapy context. Prerequisites: The student must be successfully completing of have successfully completed the Skin Care & Eye Treatments and Electricity and Basic Physics for Beauticians courses before starting the Facial Electrical Treatments course.	8	5
Anatomy & Physiology for Beauticians Aim: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology required for manicurists and beauticians. Manicurist anatomy and physiology includes bones, arteries, veins, and lymphatic structures of the lower arm, hand, lower leg and foot, as well as nail structures, disorders and diseases. Beautician anatomy and physiology includes bones, arteries, nerves, and lymphatic structures of the head, neck and shoulder area, as well as the structure, function, diseases and disorders of the skin. Histology (the study of cells and tissues) is also covered in this course, as are contraindications to treatment.	8	5
Chemistry for Beauticians Aim: Students will be able to define terms and classifications relevant to cosmetic chemistry and electricity, explain the basics of chemistry, and explain the type, functions, properties, and/or main ingredients in skin care products.	5	4
Electricity & Basic Physics for Beauticians Aim: Students will be able to explain various issues relating to basic physics and electricity, including how these issues affect, or are relevant to, beautician treatments and their safe application.	8	4
Professional Conduct & Business Awareness Aim: Students will be able to explain and demonstrate knowledge in the professional and ethical conduct related to the beauty therapy and related industries. Demonstration of knowledge of various business aspects as they relate to beauty therapy is also required.	2	4

Anatomy & Physiology for Physiatrics Aim: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, lymphatic, neurological, endocrine, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems of the human body, including contraindications, diseases and disorders in a body therapy context. Demonstration of knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the skin, skin diseases and disorders, histology, and contraindications in a body therapy context is required.	26	5
Figure Diagnosis Aim: Students will be able to correctly determine figure and postural conditions and muscle tone. In addition, demonstration of knowledge of various nutritional aspects must be completed. Students must also prepare a suitable treatment for a client's condition, incorporating various data received.	4	5
Swedish Massage Aim: Students will be able to recognise contraindications to massage, demonstrate on-going client modesty and perform a Swedish massage treatment, employing the classical massage movements, to an industry-acceptable standard in an industry-acceptable time-frame, bearing in mind the constraints of the Physiotherapy Act.	5	5
Body Electrical Treatments Aim: Students will be able to select the appropriate equipment for treatment, check for contraindications, and apply the treatment correctly, effectively, safely and within an industry-acceptable timeframe. Electricity & Basic Physics for Physiatrics Aim: Students will be able to explain various issues relating to basic physics and electricity, including how these issues affect, or are relevant to, physiatrics treatments and their safe application.	7	5
