The Certificate in Nail Technology deals with manicures, pedicures and, most importantly, nail technology.
This course is suggested for those who have no prior beauty therapy training.

Qualified beauty therapists can also take this course with RPL towards 9 credits in this qualification.

Graduates successfully completing this course become a fully-qualified nail technician as recognised in New Zealand and most countries throughout the world.
Nail technology, according to KiwiCareers, is one of the most rapidly growing industries in New Zealand at the moment.
Our tutors have many years experience in the nail technology industry and hold NZQA-Approved and / or international qualifications in nail technology.
In order to work on a cruise ship, you are required to hold a recognised Certificate in Nail Technology (NZQA-Approved).
We offer the only NZQA-Approved dedicated Certificate in Nail Technology course in the South Island.
It is important to note that any entry-level nail technology course you are looking at undertaking complies with the following:
- It is at least 400 hours in total; and
- You undertake supervised practical training (required for employment); and
- It includes all the subjects as we have listed below; and
- It is NZQA-Approved and approved by ITEC and/or CIBTAC; and
- It is recognised by the industry.

This course is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and the National School of Aesthetics is accredited to teach it.

How the Certificate in Nail Technology Fits into the Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Applied Aesthetics

The Certificate in Nail Technology gives the student who successfully completes and graduates the course a total of 9 credits towards the Diploma in Beauty Therapy & Applied Aesthetics (120 credits).

This course does not qualify a student as a partially- or fully-qualified Beauty Therapist upon completion. The student would need to complete all three courses (Certificate in Aesthetics, Certificate in Physiatrics and Certificate in Electrology) to be considered a fully-qualified Beauty Therapist in New Zealand and most countries around the world.

Subjects in the Certificate in Nail Technology

Students attending the Certificate in Nail Technology course will engage in the following courses (click on the course name for more information):

Manicure & Pedicure Aim: Students will be able to determine contraindications, recognise nail diseases and disorders, and demonstrate proper use of manicure tools. Manicure and pedicure treatments include nail filing, specialised nail treatments, massage of the hand & lower arm or foot & lower leg, and nail enamel application, with the student completing the treatment to an industry-standard in an industry-acceptable time-frame.	4	4
Anatomy & Physiology for Manicurists Aim: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the bones, arteries, veins, and lymphatic structures of the lower arm, hand, lower leg and foot. In addition, demonstration of knowledge regarding the structure and function of the nail, incorporating other factors such as diseases and disorders, is required. Students must demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the skin as it pertains to manicure.	2	5
Chemistry for Manicurists Aim: Students will be able to explain the qualities, functions, main ingredient, and hazards of manicure products.	1	4
Nail Technology Aim: Students will be able to check for contraindications, recognise nail diseases and disorders, and demonstrate sanitisation techniques in a nail technology context. Practical applications of a gel nail system, an acrylic nail system, a silk nail system, a nail wrap system, nail repairs, nail tips, a UV gel overlay, and building a free-form nail within industry-acceptable time-frames and to an industry-acceptable standard must be demonstrated. Students must also demonstrate correct filing, buffing, finishing, in-filling and enameling techniques. Prerequisites: The student must have completed the Manicure & Pedicure course or demonstrated equivalent knowledge prior to undertaking this course.	30	4
Sciences for Nail Technicians Aim: Students will be able to explain nail diseases and disorders and recognise and explain possible causes of damage from previous nail applications. Demonstration of knowledge in contents and chemistry of products used in nail technology is required. Students should explain the appropriate nail system to use, hygiene procedures, frequency and reasoning why nails should be in-filled, and the correct removal of false nails. Prerequisites: The student must have completed the Chemistry for Manicurists and Anatomy and Physiology for Manicurists Courses, or demonstrated equivalent knowledge, prior to undertaking this course.	6	4
Professional Conduct & Business Awareness Aim: Students will be able to explain and demonstrate knowledge in the professional and ethical conduct related to the beauty therapy and related industries. Demonstration of knowledge of various business aspects as they relate to beauty therapy is also required.	2	4
