What is Nail Technology?

In New Zealand, nail technology consists of treatments to the nails of the hands and feet, both natural and artificial. This includes performing manicures and pedicures and augmenting the nails with false tips and false nails.

What Type of Treatments Does a Fully-Qualified Nail Technician Perform?

Once qualified, a nail technician typically performs the following treatments:

  • Manicure
  • Pedicure
  • Acrylic nails
  • Gel nails
  • Fibreglass nails
  • Nail tips
  • Repairs and maintenance

How Do I Become a Nail Technician?

You need to graduate from a course like our New Zealand Certificate in Nail Technology course. Ensure the course you are looking at has all the subjects listed above. It’s very important to qualify through an NZQA-Approved course, as, if you have an accident in the clinic and are not properly trained (do not hold a recognised certificate), you may be held liable and expected to pay damages.

If you want to work on a cruise ship, or internationally, you’ll most likely need an NZQA-Approved Certificate in Nail Technology. Steiner, the largest cruise ship recruiters of nail technicians internationally, require you hold a government-approved qualification in order to gain employment on their ships.

You cannot become a qualified nail technician by apprenticeship. You must train in a course at a provider like ours.

You cannot become a qualified nail technician through distance or correspondence learning. You must attend a course as the subjects are very practical and require supervision.

If you have any questions about training, or would like to ask further questions, by all means, feel free to contact us.
