How do you know if you are eligible for Fees Free?

To determine if you are eligible for Fees Free, you can visit www.feesfree.govt.nz with your National Student Number / NZQA number. You’ll need to select 2019 as the year of study and that you are doing provider based training. This should tell you yes, no, or maybe. If it says:

  • Yes: you won’t need to do anything more.
  • No: you will need to apply for a Student Loan with StudyLink at www.studylink.govt.nz
  • Maybe: you will need to fill in the declaration TEC give you and return it to them.

Please note that Fees Free does not cover anything that the student needs to purchase outside the school (uniform top or linen kit, for example) or optional items (international examinations, for example).

If you’ve accessed under 1 equivalent full time status (EFTS) and $12,000 GST inclusive in 2018, you may be eligible for further Fees Free up to the amount you did not spend or your remaining EFTS, whichever comes first. You will need to arrange a Student Loan to pay the difference before the course starts.
